Tony Bergstrom

Tony Bergstrom actually played more snaps than Shawn Lauvao and Brandon Scherff this season. Retained in 2018 to be the Washington Redskins primary depth piece on the interior, Bergstrom held up his end of the bargain in that regard.

Maintaining good health for most of the season, Tony Bergstrom played in thirteen games, starting eight of them at right guard. Aside from Chase Roullier, Bergstrom was perhaps the most consistent piece on the interior line. That should not go unnoticed when the Redskins consider re-signing Bergstrom in free agency this year.

Another factoid that the Redskins should not overlook when deciding whether to ink the soon-to-be 33-year old? In 22 games with the Redskins over two years, Bergstrom has yet to allow a sack. It’s strange; he’s lacking in both strength and athleticism, and he’s not a starting-caliber player, but as a reserve, he does what all reserves should do. He fills a hole when it needs to be filled.

Releasing Bergstrom wouldn’t be an irreconcilable choice, as the veteran is aging, and more could be done to actually invest in the team’s offensive line depth, as opposed to simply settling for experience. But Bergstrom was a decent player in 2018, who showcased versatility, playing out of his natural position. If he’s not back in 2019, his stint with the Redskins should be looked back upon with a nod of respect.
