Redskins 2019 College Football Championship mock draft

Round 5
Pick No. 15 – WR Hunter Renfrow – Clemson
Yes, I know. The Redskins need a receiver. Yes, I know. The Redskins haven’t picked a receiver yet. If this was 2020, we’d have coveted Alabama pass catchers like Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III to salivate over. But it’s 2019. So we had to wait for Clemson’s Hunter Renfrow.
I apologize; I don’t make the rules of the National Championship mock. But there’s a consolation prize that comes with this restriction: Renfrow is a solid player in his own right. Per Jon Ledyard of The Draft Network, Renfrow doesn’t have any red flags. He’s an experienced player who does well to find openings in zone coverage, and always seems to come up clutch in crucial moments. From a skill perspective, he’s not a stellar athlete, and thus, not a particularly explosive route runner. But, if I may use one or two cliches, he’s a gritty, workmanlike receiver. Sorry not sorry.
The Redskins might need a premier offensive talent at wide receiver in the 2019 NFL Draft, but if they pick Renfrow, they’ll get a player they can rely on if his name is called. Plus, it might help out Trevor Lawrence out to have one of his former team mates here when he comes to D.C. in 2021.
Pick No. 33 – EDGE Christian Miller – Alabama
Christian Miller might not have as much developmental upside as the Redskins would want from an edge rusher in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he’s got just about everything else.
Miller, a redshirt senior for the Alabama Crimson Tide, amassed a modest resume as a reserve in 2018. In fourteen games so far with the Crimson Tide, Miller has logged 8.0 sacks and 11.0 tackles for loss. For a player who rotates in on around half of the team’s defensive snaps, those are impressive numbers.
Take a look at Jon Ledyard’s scouting report for Miller on The Draft Network, and you’ll find that while Miller isn’t the flashiest edge rusher, and while he has some injury concerns, he’s a smart player with some fundamental prowess to his game. He’s a lengthy player with a motor that doesn’t stop churning, and he can drop back in shallow coverage as an outside linebacker, if the Redskins deem it necessary situationally.
