Washington Redskins 2018 season running back grades
By Ian Cummings
Adrian Peterson
33 years old. Less than five years removed from a catastrophic knee injury. Over a decade of accumulated wear and tear. Stuck behind an offensive line in shambles.
Sometimes, none of it matters. Sometimes, a Hall of Famer transcends the circumstances.
Adrian Peterson transcended the circumstances for the Redskins in 2018. While the season as a whole may have been disappointing, Peterson’s late-career resurgence was truly incredible to witness.
While players dropped like flies around him, Peterson played in all 16 games on the year, amassing 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns on 251 carries, in addition to logging over 200 receiving yards and one touchdown as a pass catcher. In an offense mired in pandemonium, Peterson was a lonely consistent asset. While his consistency waned a bit down the stretch, and while he wasn’t the most versatile weapon on offense, Peterson still found a way to carve out a respectable campaign, with all the odds against him.
Set to turn 34 years old later this offseason, and set to be leapfrogged by Derrius Guice, when the latter returns to full health, Peterson won’t be relied on as a workhorse back in 2019. But the Redskins should seriously consider keeping him on a cheap deal, as a mentor for the young back. As Peterson showed this year, Guice could learn a great deal from one of the best ever to carry the rock.
