No. 4 – Redskins must get pressure on Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz is not having the MVP type of season he was having in 2017 before he went down with a knee injury. The athleticism he displayed before the injury hasn’t quite returned yet. However, he is still having a solid season this year as he continues to work his way back.

While Wentz did have three interceptions against the Saints, he has otherwise been very good at protecting the football. The Eagles have one of the best lines in the league, anchored by All-Pros Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce. Jason Peters is still a stalwart out at tackle as well. The Redskins’ defense is going to have to find a way to get off their blocks and get to Wentz. This is also going to fall on Greg Manusky to ‘cook up’ something in the lab this week, as he has had some extra time to prepare a more exotic game plan than what they have run in weeks prior.

The Redskins do not run an overly complicated defensive scheme under Manusky. Because of the simplicity, it allows for defenders to think less and react fast with the hopes they will out-execute the opponent. This is a problem though when an opponent finds a way to attack the defense.

light. More. Redskins have eight players questionable ahead of MNF

Manusky must use this extra time to put in some unique stunts and blitzes that Wentz hasn’t seen before, to help generate some extra pressure. Wentz is only in his third year in the league, so there are still a lot of looks he hasn’t seen yet. The secondary must do a better job in coverage and make him hold the ball longer so the pass rush can get there. Preston Smith has had a sack in three straight games and must have another big game, along with Ryan Kerrigan, while Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen need to collapse the pocket and make Wentz uncomfortable.
