2. Redskins commit 10 penalties

I know the frustration with the officials has been a big story over the course of the past few weeks. The Redskins have definitely gotten the short end of the stick on many calls, but that has been a problem league-wide this year as officiating continues to be a major problem for NFL games. But, that’s for another day.

In big-time games under Jay Gruden, the Redskins have often shown up uninspired. They have looked sluggish, and frequently they make brutal mistakes that have cost the team dearly. While some may hope that this team can change the ‘Skins’ prime-time fate, it may not be in the cards.

On the offensive side of the ball, the team is using a makeshift interior offensive line. Colt McCoy is also the starting QB, and while he’s one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league, he will make his share of mistakes. So, the offense could sputter in this game as a result of those mistakes.

One way that errors tend to manifest themselves is via penalties. And I expect that the Redskins will be penalized frequently against the Eagles. If it does happen, you can cry foul and blame the referees. You can also blame the home field advantage of the Eagles. But if it happens, it will have a negative impact on the Redskins.

Simply put, I think the team will come out a little flat and unfocused. That will cause them to make mistakes, and there could be a bunch of holding calls on both sides of the ball at the beginning of the game. Even if there’s just a little lack of discipline, that could be enough to push the team towards double-digits in terms of penalties.

Hopefully, Washington will prove me wrong here. But for now, I expect them to have one a tough time stay disciplined, and that could cost them some serious yardage and opportunities.
