5. D.J. Swearinger leads team in tackles with 10-plus, notches an interception

The Redskins need someone in the middle of their defense to step up. They have had a lot of trouble covering players in that area, and a lot of it lies on their linebackers. Still, the safeties could be better too and provide more help. And D.J. Swearinger is probably the logical guy to step up.

As our own Ian Cummings pointed out in his players to watch in Week 13, Swearinger has called out his teammates in recent weeks, but he needs to bring that same spirit to the field.

Here’s what Cummings said about Swearinger in that piece.

More from Commanders News

"When the Redskins defense thrived earlier in the season, they made plays, and forced the issue by forcing turnovers. Sloppy football on the part of their opponents helped, but there was a time when Washington was known for being aggressive in pursuit of possession. On Monday, in an important division matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Redskins will need that hungry mentality, and it comes from the man who eats with two spoons, D.J. Swearinger. Perhaps, in these dire times, he can instill new life into the defense."

Against the Eagles, Swearinger will probably do everything he can to will the defense into the game. Expect him to be first to the ball frequently and rack up some tackles. And, he might be able to log a pick. It may not be enough to win the game, but expect a monster stat-line from Swearinger either way.
