Don’t… dismiss the age and/or speed problem on defense

The Washington Redskins have a need.

A need for speed.

It’s been a drastic problem for the Washington Redskins defense this year, and it’s one that they can’t exactly fix in season. Substitutions can be made in some cases, but younger players, without consistent starting reps, are going to be put at a disadvantage.

Thus, Washington got itself stuck with players like Mason Foster at linebacker. And Josh Norman at cornerback. And dare I say… Ryan Kerrigan on the edge. At their best, these players are solid starters, but at their worst, they’re all virtually 30 years old or older, they’re slow, and they’re only getting slower.

Combined, those three players’ 2018 cap hit equates to $30.6 million. As much as it hurts to say goodbye to the prime of talented players, that money will eventually need to be spent on speed. And the Redskins can’t spend another offseason kidding themselves. They need to build a foundation for the future, to keep the best parts of this defense in tact.

And fast.
