Don’t… overpay undeserving players

This should go without saying, but it’s a pothole that plenty of teams manage to fall into over the course of a given offseason. The Redskins, earlier in the twenty-first century, were perhaps the absolute worst at this. They’ve gotten better since, but now isn’t the time to get generous.

This goes for outside free agents, as well as inside free agents. Jamison Crowder and Preston Smith are both due for new contracts, but one can make a case that neither has earned it, and Crowder, in particular, is looking more and more like a free agency loss.

With up-and-comers at both edge rusher and wide receiver in Ryan Anderson and Trey Quinn, Washington can afford to part ways with marginal contributors, if they see it fit. When faced with a tough decision, they should err on the side of the greater savings. It’s the best long-term plan.

It should be noted that if Preston Smith keeps up his current level of play, then he will earn an extension. He’s been incredibly disruptive over the past few weeks.
