Scenario No. 4

To win at least four of their final five games, and to safely punch their ticket to the 2018 NFL playoffs, Jay Gruden will have to do something he hasn’t done consistently in five years with the Washington Redskins.

Adapt.

While the injuries have hurt this season, it’s evident that there are multiple ways in which the team is not using its players to their strengths. A team’s scheme should mold around the capacities of its players; players should not be thrust into pegs in which they don’t fit.

But let’s not get carried away with the knock on flexibility. It’s admittedly hard to be flexible when a quarter of your team is on injured reserve. But sooner or later, Gruden has to prove he isn’t being outdated as an offensive mind. One way to do that is to maximize his personnel, and get something, anything, going.

If Gruden can do that, the Redskins can take advantage of an easy closing stretch. They can make the playoffs, and even if they get ousted in Round 1, Gruden can add another resilient stand to his resume, and perhaps save his job.
