Josh Doctson is starting to emerge as the No. 1 receiver in Washington. Considering how their unit has performed overall this season, that may not be much of a compliment. But still, Doctson is really starting to show the signs of having a role in the offense.

The role is as a red zone weapon, and that’s exactly what Doctson should be. He has solid size and jump ball ability, and it seems that he now has chemistry with Alex Smith.

Smith looked Doctson’s way in the end zone for the score, but it was notable what type of play it came on. Smith had to buy time in the pocket, and Doctson worked the back of the end zone and stayed in bounds while doing so. He went up to catch the ball and was able to secure it without dropping it. That’s a good sign that his hands are improving, so hopefully, he will continue to make strides.

Doctson has caught scores in back-to-back games. He looks more comfortable. And most importantly, he’s learning how to use his skill set to his advantage. If he continues to improve in the second half of the season, he may be able to carve out a role as a starter on the outside moving forward. That’s enough to make him a standout performer for this week, and it could happen further down the road.
