Evaluating 3 wide receivers the Redskins could trade for on deadline day
Tate represents the best receiver that the team could get. He also represents a player that would be a perfect fit for what they look to do on offense and could become an excellent weapon for them.
Tate has solid speed, but his best skill is his elusive ability. When he has the ball in his hands, he can endlessly make his opponents miss and turn nothing into something. That’s why he led the league in yards after the catch last season and has continued to succeed in that area this year.
For the Redskins, Tate could be an excellent player to catch short screens or routes within 10 yards and turn them into big plays. Alex Smith likes to throw the ball in the short to intermediate range, and if the ‘Skins got a guy like Tate, he would be a real threat to turn any short catch into a massive gain. And that would give Jay Gruden and company another excellent weapon to work with.
If the Redskins can march out an offense that features both Tate and Chris Thompson, opposing teams will have a lot of trouble deciding who to cover. It would make the offense more versatile and could be the key to unlocking the team’s full potential.
Should the Lions actually request a fourth-round pick for Tate, the Redskins should jump right away. That’s a fair price to get a quality player who could upgrade their offense. If they acquire anyone in a trade, let’s hope it’s Tate.
