Evaluating 3 wide receivers the Redskins could trade for on deadline day
Thomas isn’t an inspiring option at this point in his career. But at the same time, is he an upgrade over what the Redskins already have? The answer to that is probably yes.
Thomas is still a solid receiver. He’s not the same speed-based athlete he was early in his career, as injuries have sapped him of some of that ability. That said, he’s a decent route runner, can play outside, and can catch passes thrown his way.
In the ‘Skins receiving corps, Thomas would be a nice fit along with speed threat Paul Richardson and the possession-based Josh Doctson. He would be a bit of a combo threat and would add a veteran presence to the group. For that reason, the team should at least consider acquiring him if he is available.
That said, the team really shouldn’t give up much for Thomas. He’s due to make $14 million next year and though he has an out in his contract, the team would still have to swallow some dead cap. For that reason, anything more than a late-round pick should be more than enough for Thomas.
Realistically, Thomas is one of the better receivers on the market. He’s also probably too expensive and isn’t necessarily needed by the team. For that reason, they’re probably better off looking elsewhere if they want help at the position.
