Redskins vs. Saints: Duds from Monday’s primetime matchup

Parting words
This loss was so bad, I feel as if it’s necessary that this article ends on a note of positivity.
Yes, the Redskins got demolished by the Saints. Yes, everyone will have to improve in preparation for the Carolina Panthers next week. But here is a reminder that last night may be as bad as it ever gets.
Teams have bad games. It happens. The Vikings scored six points on the Bills at home, a Bills team that is bottom five in talent in the NFL. The Falcons got blown out by a Steelers’ team with a swiss cheese defense.
Losses like this happen, and in a way, it wasn’t completely unpredictable. The Redskins defense is still young, and although there is talent, there will be growing pains. Against a high-powered Saints’ offense, and an all-time great in Drew Brees, the indications were there. The offensive performance is especially disappointing, but perhaps they’ll be motivated to now change the perception.
While the Redskins’ loss may paint them as a non-contender, here are more facts to go along with the score: The Redskins are 2-2, still at the top of the NFC East, having yet to play a divisional game. Last night may have felt like the unceremonious ending to another middling season, but there are still 12 games left to play. With any luck, this game will light a perpetual flame under Washington, and motivate them to never come back to this dark corner.
Because, as the ageless adage says, it’s a marathon. Not a sprint.
