Redskins vs. Saints: 5 players to watch in Week 5 of 2018
By Ian Cummings
No. 1 – WR Josh Doctson
The clock is ticking for the Redskins 2016 first-round pick, and with every passing week, it feels more and more as if he simply doesn’t fit the Redskins offensive scheme.
Whatever the case, Josh Doctson hasn’t produced this season, and he has as good an opportunity as any to flip the script against the Saints. Patrick Robinson is out for the year, Ken Crawley has allowed a perfect passer rating thus far, per PFF’s Sam Monson, and Marshon Lattimore has also gotten off to a slow start.
Doctson doesn’t excel as a route runner, but he has the contested catch ability to beat defenders for toss-up balls. Against the Saints’ underwhelming pass defenders, Alex Smith would be smart to give Doctson a few chances. If the defense can’t keep Drew Brees under wraps, he won’t have a choice.
Doctson might not even play this Monday; he’s been out of practice with a heel injury this week. If he doesn’t play, it will be interesting to see how the team responds. And if he does, one question must be answered: Can he rise up to the occasion?
