2. The offensive line

Normally, it’s easy enough to find one weak spot among a positional group that was the main problem for the team. However, that wasn’t the case with the Redskins offensive line on Sunday.

Against the Colts, the Redskins offensive line was just plain bad. Despite the fact that the Colts have few pass rushing weapons outside of Jabaal Sheard, the unit allowed constant pressure on Alex Smith. And even worse, they were completely unable to generate anything in the run game.

Both Brandon Scherff and Trent Williams were injured in this contest. These two are the best players on the offensive front and if the team has to operate without either, the season could be in jeopardy. That may seem like an overstatement, but the team’s biggest weakness is their offensive line depth. And when either of these players was off the field on Sunday, it definitely showed.

Moving forward, the Redskins are going to have to do a lot to give Smith more time in the pocket. It simply wasn’t there on Sunday. But again, if you were to guess which team the Redskins would have more trouble blocking against, the Cardinals or the Colts, I would wager that a majority would have speculated the Cardinals to be the tougher matchup.

Moving forward, the offensive line has to be better. There’s no two ways about it. If they can’t rapidly improve ahead of the Week 3 clash with the Packers, the team could have trouble staying competitive and blocking Clay Matthews. Either way, this was a poor showing for the Redskins line and they deserve criticism for it.
