No. 2 – The Redskins need to be better downfield

The Redskins were effective in the short game, along with the running game as well. Yes, they were able to establish command and dominance at the line, which allowed them to control the game. However, they need to do a better job of working the football downfield to have the complete package.

Case in point? Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson were the team’s leading receivers. Peterson had two receptions for 70 yards and Thompson had six receptions for 63 yards and one TD. Jordan Reed looked great with four receptions for 48 yards and one TD. Even Reed was impressed with his performance and he showed it with his dance moves on the sideline…

Yes, everyone was confused yet entertained with this sideline antic, but as long as Reed is performing, he can do whatever dance he wants off the field.

But let’s get back to the matter at hand. The next closest receiver that was relevant was Jamison Crowder with 32 yards receiving. Paul Richardson had a subpar performance and Josh Doctson was invisible. Smith only averaged 8.5 yards per throw, which needs to increase if the Redskins are going to compete with the best of the best.

Total, these three wide outs only had 13 targets. This number is too low for talented pieces. I know it’s only the first game, but Gruden needs to figure out how to get the ball down field so that he can open up the offense even more.

It’s great that the running game was fantastic, but that’s not going to happen every single week. These receivers are very talented and need to see more targets and opportunities. If they are stagnant next week against the Indianapolis Colts, which they shouldn’t be, then I’ll hit the ‘concerned’ button. The last thing I want is for fans to start calling for Dez Bryant. So, please Smith and Gruden, get the ball downfield!
