Redskins: Predicting the practice squad following the cut to 53
WR Simmie Cobbs Jr.
Cobbs was considered by some to be a potential Round 3-5 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but he instead went undrafted. When he landed with the Redskins, some thought he might have a chance to fight for a spot on the roster as a sixth receiver.
During the offseason, Cobbs wasn’t able to separate himself in the receiving room. The battle for the final roster spot ended up coming down to Brian Quick and Cam Sims, and that left Cobbs as the No. 8 receiver on the roster. It was an unfortunate development for him, but in the final two games, he did enough to flash his potential.
Cobbs had a couple of nice catches working with Kevin Hogan, and that was enough to show that he belongs on the practice squad. Overall, he finished the preseason with seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.
With a year of seasoning and learning, there’s a chance that he will be able to become a possession receiver with some jump ball skills in the red zone. That alone will be enough to land him on the practice squad.
Cobbs is one of those guys that could really pan out if he’s given more time to develop. He has a lot of potential and in the event that the Redskins suffer an injury at receiver, he would be a fine call up as a depth player. For that reason, adding him to the practice squad makes a lot of sense.
