Redskins: Predicting the practice squad following the cut to 53
CB Ranthony Texada
The Redskins liked what they saw out of their young cornerbacks enough to release Orlando Scandrick. While Texada didn’t quite do enough to beat out Greg Stroman or Danny Johnson, he still definitely deserves a shot on the practice squad.
In the final two weeks of the preseason, Texada made some nice plays against the Broncos and the Ravens. He almost made an incredible interception against the Broncos, and made a great return off an easy pick against Baltimore. The latter was an easy pick, but the more impressive part was how quickly he was able to shoot up the field.
Texada has the skills needed to develop into a solid backup and a potential nickel at the NFL level. He doesn’t have great size, but that doesn’t matter as he has good coverage skills and solid speed.
With a year on the practice squad and some extra time to work with Torrian Gray, Texada could become a quality piece of organizational depth for the Redskins. Again, while he lost the battle to Stroman and Johnson, he could be a guy that might have an impact at some point during his NFL career. He just needs a bit more time before he’ll be ready for the NFL.
Keeping two corners on the practice squad would be a smart move, as the Redskins may be parting with Josh Norman next offseason and have some shaky depth. Thus, there’s a solid chance that both Iworah and Texada make the practice squad, though it’s unclear which would have the advantage if the team chose only one.
