No. 4 – Daron Payne gets two sacks

Early on in the season, you always want to stay on the conservative side when projecting rookie production. They’re new to the league, and there are learning curves that must be tackled.

That said, there isn’t much of a learning curve for pure athleticism and brute strength. That’s what Redskins’ first-round rookie Daron Payne has. And he showed it off last week.

Payne managed to get a sack on rookie quarterback Sam Darnold against the New York Jets. On the play, Payne used his combination of athleticism and power beautifully, shifting and shoving the guard aside to clear the way for himself and send Darnold to the turf.

In college, Payne’s bread and butter was protecting against the run. Based on what he’s shown in limited action, he’s a more-than-capable pass rusher up the interior, and with continued tutelage from Jim Tomsula, he could truly become the best defensive lineman on the Redskins’ roster, which is saying something.

Against the Broncos’ starters, Payne should have another opportunity to make some noise. Center Matt Paradis is on the tail end of his prime, Ronald Leary is only a decent starter, and Connor McGovern isn’t a starting-caliber player at guard. Payne will eat, and because we’re making bold predictions, why can’t he have seconds? Two sacks for Daron Payne in Week 2. Book it.
