4. Backup Interior O-Line

Tony Bergstrom vs. The Field

This may not be the most exciting battle to watch, but nonetheless, it is certainly an important one. The Redskins have minimal depth on their offensive line, and they are going to have to find some backup players from a slew of candidates. Thus far, their backup unit has played poorly, so finding help for the interior line could be an issue.

Right now, Bergstrom appears to be the favorite to man the backup center/guard position. That’s not exactly a great thing, as Bergstrom doesn’t appear to be more than a journeyman at the position. While Bergstrom seems likely to make the roster, the team should hope that one of their younger guys steps up and earns playing time.

The players to watch on the interior of the offensive line are Kyle Kalis and Tyler Catalina. Both were added as undrafted free agents last year and both spent portions of the season on NFL rosters. Right now, Catalina probably has the edge over Kalis because he is slightly more versatile. But, if either one starts to pull away and demonstrate that he’s a better player, that will give him a chance to make the team.

One dark horse to watch here: T.J. Clemmings. I’ve been pushing for the team to turn him into a guard/tackle backup and while that hasn’t happened yet, they could experiment with it in the final two preseason games. And if he flashes enough upside, the former fourth-round pick could have a chance to make the roster.

Again, this may not be a thrilling battle. But it certainly is an important one that bears watching as the meaningful part of the preseason comes to a close.
