Quarterbacks (2)

Keeping: Alex Smith, Colt McCoy

Notable Cut: Kevin Hogan

I really wanted to let the Redskins keep three quarterbacks, but the numbers just didn’t work out because of the other spaces needed on the roster. The Redskins really have a lot of talent that they need to keep this offseason, so keeping three quarterbacks might be a luxury.

Deciding between McCoy and Hogan wasn’t easy, but the fact remains that McCoy is the better player. McCoy is one of the league’s steadiest backups, and he profiles as a perfect spot starter should Smith miss some games in 2018.

While some will point out the fact that the Redskins did trade to get Hogan, it doesn’t really matter. Hogan was a fifth-round pick by the Chiefs and they cut him the same year they selected him. He did see some action in Cleveland, but he has a long way to go as a passer before he’s ready to contribute at the NFL level. The Redskins let a similar, if not, better, project in Nate Sudfeld go last season, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hogan be given the same treatment in 2018.

Hogan’s a top practice squad candidate if he clears waivers. The Redskins would probably like to keep him, but there just isn’t enough space for him. On my 53-man roster projection, he just happened to be the 54th man.
