2018 outlook for Spaight

Spaight’s path to a roster spot isn’t going to be an easy one. Still, he will get a chance to prove himself as a quality player.

Spaight has been working with the current coaching staff since he came to the team in 2015. Jay Gruden and company have kept him on the roster since that time and have given him playing time. They obviously like his run defense and special teams ability, but his lack of growth in coverage could hold him back.

The biggest question for 2018 is, will Spaight make the team? And if he does, what role will he have? That question will likely be partially answered during training camp and when the first depth chart is released. His main competition is Vigil and since Spaight is a few years younger than him, he might end up getting the nod if they play equally.

Despite all of this, it seems that Spaight will be, at best, the fourth linebacker on the Redskins roster. He can be used as a situational run stuffer or a blitzer. But if he’s on the field in coverage, that won’t be a winning formula for the Redskins.

Spaight truly is a wild card. It will be fun to see what he can accomplish during training camp. For now, he’s firmly on the roster bubble.
