Florida State. Derwin James. 17. player. 13. . Safety

Derwin James is one of a few players whom I’ve mocked to the same team in both of my NFL mock drafts. The fit with Los Angeles is an impeccable one, and if he makes it this far down the NFL Draft board, the Chargers would have to pick him up.

The Chargers will have a need at safety once the dust of free agency clears. Tre Boston is set to hit the open market, and thus, there will be an opening at free safety. Luckily for the Chargers, that’s where Derwin James fits best.

James has exceptional size, standing at 6-foot-3, 214, and he moves very well for having such a long frame. How he test at the combine will have some bearing on how early he gets drafted, but right now, it’s clear that he has the coverage skills to be a very good safety in the NFL.

James’ blitzing skills only reiterate the notion that he is a player who can do everything. Consistency is an issue for the the Florida State product, but he has all the skills, he has the right mentality, and he is going to start for a team on day one next year. The Chargers will not hesitate to draft him if he makes it this far.
