No. 2 – QB Kirk Cousins

It’s been more of the same for Kirk Cousins in 2017. The signal caller hasn’t always been perfect, but he has, without a doubt, solidified himself as a top ten quarterback in this league. And for the third straight year, he’s put up numbers worthy of a Pro Bowl nod. And yet, he hasn’t gotten such recognition.

The Redskins’ fate in 2017 may have had something to do with it. The NFC’s Pro Bowl quarterbacks were all in the playoff race longer than Washington, and two of those quarterbacks’ teams will likely be contenders in the postseason dance. The Redskins, in contrast to these teams, are 6-8, hampered by injuries, and mathematically eliminated from the playoff race.

Has Cousins contributed to the downfall of this team? There are times where he could have been better, but overall, when you look at quarterbacks like Phillip Rivers and Drew Brees, the case can be made that Kirk Cousins did just as much with far, far less.

More from Riggo's Rag

Cousins has thrown for over 3,600 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just 9 interceptions. He hasn’t had a competent running game all year, and his offensive line has been a who’s who of reserve players all season. Every starter in the trenches was injured at some point, and there were times when several third stringers were forced to start.

Through the adversity, Cousins has pressed onward. And he’s shined. While Drew Brees has had an extraordinary running game, and while Phillip Rivers has had one of the better overall receiving cores in the league, Kirk Cousins has dragged the Redskins forward, kicking and screaming, with close to no help at all. He should have at least nabbed an alternate slot. This was his best year. And he did it on his own.
