2. Redskins defense records 5+ sacks

While the Redskins are currently dealing with offensive line problems, the Chargers unit might be even worse. From center to right tackle, the Chargers have one of the weaker starting units in the league. They have dealt with injuries of their own, but the players they have are also just much worse.

Notably, right tackle Joe Barksdale has struggled this season. He has been a sieve on the right side of the line and Rivers has paid a price as a result. While his line has only allowed 13 sacks this year, Rivers has been hit a lot and has done enough to throw the ball away quickly when under pressure.

Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith have to be excited about this matchup. The Chargers just don’t have enough quality players to matchup with their strong defensive unit. Kerrigan needs just one sack to record double digit sacks in consecutive seasons for the first time. There’s no doubt he will be motivated to take advantage of the poor offensive line play.

On the other side, Smith started the season strong, but hasn’t done as well in the games since. In the first five games, he recorded 4.5 sacks. In the next six, he had none. Last week, he had a half a sack and looked better getting after the quarterback. Perhaps he’s getting on another hot streak and he will be looking to really get going on Sunday.

Elsewhere on defense, Anthony Lanier should get some push when facing the guards of the Chargers while Matt Ioannidis could have a nice day too. Getting a strong interior rush will be able to free up more one-on-one opportunities on the outside for the Washington edge rushers, so that would definitely benefit the team.

Overall, a five sack day for the Redskins would do enough to keep them in the game. So, it’s possible that will happen as they realize what they need to do to stay competitive.
