Special Teams: Blocked kick was the true game changer

In the second quarter, the Redskins had a chance to take a two score lead. Ahead of the Cowboys by a score of 13-7, the team was setting up for a field goal. Nick Rose trotted onto the field. He had made his previous two field goals and would certainly have a chance to make that one. However, that’s not how it ended up going down.

The snap was delivered a bit off center by long snapper Nick Sundberg. It was the second time that the veteran had snapped the ball to the right of Tress Way during the game, but the holder was unable to get the ball into position quick enough for Rose to hit it square. As a result, Rose hit a lower, line drive kick that was blocked by the Cowboys.

If that wasn’t bad enough already, the Cowboys were able to pick the ball up at the goal line and run it all the way down into Washington territory. They got it inside the Redskins five yard line where Ezekiel Elliott was able to punch the ball in.

It’s hard to blame any three of the players for what happened on this play. Sundberg was dealing with slick conditions that made it hard to snap the ball. Way had to corral the bad snap. Rose had to do his best to kick it. The trio didn’t execute which really hurt the team. The play turned into the turning point for the game and gave the momentum to the Cowboys from that moment on.
