3. Attack Chiefs No. 2 cornerback in matchups

The Chiefs have one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL in Marcus Peters. The former Washington product can cover any receiver and is also a terrific ballhawk. Kirk Cousins is going to want to avoid throwing at him, and luckily for him the Chiefs have a weakness on their defense.

Across from Peters and in the slot, the Chiefs don’t have the most talented players. Sure, Terrance Mitchell has proven to be a solid option at times, but he I far from consistent. And Phillip Gaines has been wildly inconsistent and the Redskins will have a strong chance to beat him as well.

It’s unclear who Peters will shadow for the Chiefs on Monday night, but if I had to guess, I would think it would be Terrelle Pryor. While Pryor hasn’t been great to start the season, he is still clearly the No. 1 receiver on the Redskins in terms of potential talent. With Pryor eliminated, the Redskins are going to have to focus on targeting Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson.

More from Riggo's Rag

Crowder is a good slot man, but he has started the 2017 season slowly. He has had issues fumbling on punt returns and hasn’t been fully healthy yet. Since Cousins has spread the ball around, Crowder hasn’t seen the volume of catches that he had initially been anticipated to get. However, Cousins should look to get him the ball in the slot against the Chiefs, considering the weakness of their slot man.

For Doctson, this could be a chance for him to have a strong showing. He had a long touchdown catch last week, and it was really the first positive for him since Week 2 of the 2016 season. Doctson needs to prove to be consistent if he wants to be trusted by the Redskins. If he can beat Mitchell when he’s on the field, that could do a lot for him to win the job as the No. 2 receiver.

Cousins has to realize where the weakness in the Chiefs secondary is and target the appropriate people to get the passing game operating. Targeting the No. 2 and slot corners is the way to take down this defense, and the Redskins players across from those two must step up to help the team improve to 3-1.
