Redskins finalize first unofficial depth chart of 2017 regular season
By Ian Cummings
On defense, there are a few more noteworthy things to bring up, none more so than the new starter at strong safety, Deshazor Everett.
Deshazor Everett is listed as the new starting strong safety, and Stefan McClure will back him up. Everett had a very strong preseason, not letting up for any offense and providing overall solid play that the Redskins can be confident in. Everett will likely remain the starter until a decision is made by Su’a Cravens pertaining to his possible retirement. Regardless of his decision, if Everett plays well, he’ll keep the job.
In the trenches, Jonathan Allen will start at defensive end, and opposite him, Stacy McGee will also start. At nose tackle, when applicable, Ziggy Hood is listed as the starter, and behind him, Stacy McGee is named as the backup. Though the Redskins don’t often play in their base 3-4 formation, it’s worth noting that no true nose tackle resides on the roster. The team let go of Joey Mbu and A.J. Francis after neither proved to be the answer in the wake of Phil Taylor’s injury. Expect the Redskins to run more of a 2-5 scheme as a result, as that may prove to be more effective with their current personnel.
In the linebacking core, Zach Brown will start opposite Mason Foster, and behind them, Will Compton and Martrell Spaight await as reserves. Josh Harvey-Clemons will likely get his first looks on special teams, but he could potentially come in on the defense as a hybrid when the role is appropriate. Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith will be the starting edge rushers, and backing them up will be Junior Galette and Ryan Anderson.

The depth chart looks solid for the Redskins, but let’s be honest. Everything looks good on paper. It’s best to wait until the regular season to draw any conclusions. The Redskins play the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday. The wait grows ever smaller. Football is almost back.
