What Derek Carr’s massive deal could mean for Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins
Moving forward
Once Carr’s deal is signed, the ball will be firmly in the Redskins court to make a move. They can try to negotiate a deal before the July 17 deadline, which was recently moved by the NFL, or they can let Cousins play on another one year deal.
At the end of the day, the Redskins have lost even more of the little leverage they had in the Cousins talks. Given the similarities between the career numbers and accomplishments of Carr and Cousins, the Redskins will be hard pressed to argue that Cousins is not worth a major deal. The market dictates the price, and it looks like $25 million is going to be the right price for Cousins.
Next: The case for Colt McCoy as a starter
The bigger question is, will the Redskins pay it? It is a relative unknown at the moment how they stand. They have shown reluctance to pay him in the past, and that definitely came back to bite them. Now, they have a $25 million question on their hands. And if they answer no, they will have nothing to fall back on except Colt McCoy and Nate Sudfeld.
