Washington Redskins Unheralded Players: WR Matt Hazel
By Ian Cummings
In the NFL, all receivers excel at certain aspects of the game. It’s the little details that separates the good from the bad. Hazel has the ability to lock down these details, but consistency is the key. He still hasn’t shown that he can rinse and repeat every Sunday.
At 6-foot-1, 198 pounds, Matt Hazel has the height to fit the mold of the 2017 Redskins’ receiver. However, his lean frame is a double-edged sword. It allows him to be elusive and quick on his feet in routes, but it also opens the door for aggressive defenders to lock him down with press coverage.
Like our last subject, Joey Mbu, Hazel has also been known to have exceptional football character. However, if he can’t build on his character and hone his skills, focusing on the little details, he may never separate himself from the many disappointing sixth-round picks to come before him. Nevertheless, there is potential, and as NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote in 2014, Hazel has all the makings of an NFL impact player.
"[Hazel is ] a smooth, fluid, athletic small-school receiver with the hands, body control and concentration to earn a roster spot and develop into a solid contributor."
For a receiver who can do it all, consistency is key. Due to his character, Hazel shouldn’t have a problem focusing on the little details and improving his game. But character alone won’t get him onto the roster. It’s the little details that count.
