Offensive Changes

Despite the solid play of Wentz as a rookie, the Eagles really lacked any sort of consistent playmaking threats on offense. They lacked a quality workhorse back, and their receiving corps was about as uninspiring as it gets. The team appears to have fixed the latter problem thanks to some big time moves in free agency.

  • The biggest signing of the offseason for the Eagles was Alshon Jeffery. A former second round draft pick, Jeffery had spent the first five years of his career playing for the Chicago Bears. He was their top receiver after the team parted ways with Brandon Marshall, and his 6-foot-4 frame allows him to be a terrific jump ball and red zone pass catcher. He will serve as the Eagles’ No. 1 receiver for at least a year and will give Wentz a true weapon to work with.

Additionally, the team added speedster Torrey Smith to serve as their No. 2 receiver. Smith was a bust after signing a big contract in San Francisco, but he should thrive in Philadelphia. If he can focus on being a downfield threat with Jeffery and Jordan Matthews functioning more as possession guys, then the offense could be a really potent attack. At the very least, the Eagles have upgraded their weaponry and should see some offensive improvement.

The Eagles have also made a couple of moves to bolster their offensive line. They agreed to retain Stefen Wisniewski on a three year deal. He is an excellent interior lineman, and should have a chance to be their starting center in 2017. Elsewhere, they inked Chance Warmack, a former first round pick, to a one year contract. He will have a chance to win a job as a backup guard and he is definitely a high upside guy.

The gains on the offensive side for the Eagles far outweigh the losses. Essentially, Chase Daniel, a player who would have been the team’s third string quarterback after the addition of Nick Foles, is the only notable loss. For this reason, expect the Eagles to be a stronger offensive team in the 2017 season. This will especially be true if they add a talented running back in the draft.
