5 Reasons Robert Griffin III Failed with Redskins
New head coach and new GM
Many Redskins fans and pundits believe that Jay Gruden was hired to be some sort of quarterback whisperer for Robert Griffin III. That he was supposed to come in and turn Griffin into a high-level pocket passer where Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan had failed.
However, I don’t think there are very many coaches who can simply work with any quarterback and turn them into a good one. The quarterback has to also be ready to become the player the coach is trying to mold them into being.
Robert Griffin III can still become a good quarterback. However, the time necessary to make that happen was not a luxury that Jay Gruden felt he had at his disposal. Being on the hot seat coming into the 2015 season Gruden made a move to a quarterback he felt he could win with.
Kirk Cousins was that quarterback. Another problem for Griffin was that the Redskins hired a new general manager in Scott McCloughan. Being a new GM, McCloughan had no loyalty to Griffin as he was not the person who drafted him.
I think both Gruden and McCloughan were both intrigued by RGIII’s talent level at first. But when a coach or GM’s job is on the line their patience wears thin. Again, with more time to develop, Robert Griffin III could still become a good quarterback.

But unfortunately Jay Gruden and Scott McCloughan simply didn’t have the time to wait for that to happen. We’ll see if that decision comes back to haunt them at some point.
