QB Luke McCown

There’s little doubt that Cousins will be starting for the Redskin in 2016, but the backup situation isn’t exactly stable as this offseason gets under way. Colt McCoy, Washington’s No. 2 in 2015, is headed for free agency, and has made it clear that he plans on testing the waters. If he does find that the grass is greener on the other side, the Redskins will need to find a new backup to take his place on the depth chart.

Despite his lack of on-field experience, McCown is still considered one of the better backup quarterbacks in the NFL. He’s only started a handful of games in his 10-year career, but played well during his short stint as the New Orleans Saints’ starter last season. Against the Carolina Panthers’ outstanding defense, he completed 31 of his 38 passes for 310 yards.

While McCown has said that he’d like to stay in New Orleans, he’s also made a few statements that are riddled with bitterness. That’s what makes it seem possible that the Redskins could lure him away from the Saints, especially if they can sign him for something similar to the $665,000 he made last season. At this point, he’s probably a better option than McCoy anyway.
