5. Rookie RB’s Matt Jones and Trey Williams

The Redskins running game was a disappointment last season.  After two consecutive years near the top of the league the Redskins fell to the bottom half in 2014.  However, they’ve taken significant steps to reverse that trend.

They hired Bill Callahan as the new offensive line coach to come in and improve the offensive line and install a power running game.  They also add more talent at the running back position by drafting Matt Jones in the third round and by signing undrafted free agent Trey Williams.

Jones is known for his tough running style and has drown comparisons to Marshawn Lynch.  With Roy Helu having left as a free agent, there is an open spot as the third down back and more carries and catches to be had on offense.

Update: Matt Jones is dealing with a knee injury and may not play.

Trey Williams speed and receiving ability out of the backfield has caught the eye of the Redskins coaches and it’s put him in a position to be in the mix for a spot on the roster if he can perform well in the preseason.

As a high round draft pick, Matt Jones spot on the roster is probably a given but if he impresses in the preseason, he could pry a few more carries away from Alfred Morris on first and second down.  So how Jones and Williams do against the Browns bears watching.
