Robert Griffin III versus New Orleans Saints 2012-Second Quarter
After getting Griffin comfortable in the first quarter, Kyle Shanahan got him out of the pocket on a play action bootleg to the left on his first play in the second quarter. Griffin then scrambled back inside the left hash mark and threw to the right sideline for 26 yards to tight end, Fred Davis.
After that, the Redskins returned to the read option with Griffin keeping the first one and giving it to Morris on the next two plays. Griffin then threw his first incompletion of the game before hitting Helu on an outside screen pass in the flat. Griffin finished the drive with a five yard touchdown to Aldrick Robinson and the Redskins were on their way to a rout of the Saints.

Primarily operating from the pistol formation, Griffin ran three more times on the next drive. He kept the ball on two of three read option runs and ran out of bounds on a bootleg keeper to the left where it didn’t seem like Griffin had any desire to throw the football. Griffin also hit Santana Moss for 27 yards on a drop back from the pistol.
Griffin had his second incompletion of the game on that drive. He ran or threw the ball on all but one play of the drive and led the Redskins to another field goal. Morris ran the ball only once in the drive.
Griffin had his first negative play towards the end of the first half when he missed the handoff on a designed draw play and lost yardage. Evan Royster finished off the half with two runs. One of the runs was on read option play.
Only two of six passing plays were off of play action in the second quarter and only one was a screen pass. Six of the nine run plays were read option runs.
Griffin scored 8 points on 6 pass plays for a 1.33 rating in the second quarter. He had 0 points on 4 run plays for a 0.00 rating.
