5) Build a quality roster through the draft.

This concept takes time and won’t happen in a year or two. When teams like the Redskins continually sign the big name free agent players, they usually get hamstrung by the cap. Free agency should supplement the roster not establish it.

It may be 3-4 years before the Redskins have a winner using this philosophy. It is the only way to have long-term success under the salary cap rules. Good teams know this and build their teams through the draft.
