Do deadlines do deals? We’ll find out next Monday at 4:00 PM. The Washington Redskins have one week remaining to negotiate with Kirk Cousins on a long-term deal.

For the past few weeks, and even months, you might argue, we’ve heard little more than silence from both sides pertaining to the Kirk Cousins contract saga. In the next seven days, however, that will have to end.

You won’t find many subjects more polarizing in sports today. Many are torn on whether Cousins has earned a long-term deal, or if he’s worth the money he’s asking. One thing is certain: the past couple years, Cousins has played at a level that is among the elites. Although he’s had his rough moments (his interception against the Giants may soon be known as simply ‘The Interception’, due to its infamy), the total body of work he’s amassed is very impressive.

The Cousins contract saga has massive implications on the future of the franchise. If Cousins is not signed, then a deal in 2018 is also unlikely. And 2017 could be the last year Cousins suits up in burgundy and gold. It won’t be the end of the world if he leaves. But the Redskins would lose a talented player who could very well blossom at another team that’s more confident in his abilities (looking at you, San Francisco).

Resolution is coming. But what kind will it be? Will it be a long-term deal, flush with guaranteed money? Or will it be silence? We’ll find out in the coming days. The deadline is July 17.
