Ten NFL head coaching candidates – Vol. 3.  This is an updated list of the top head coaching candidates for the remaining open NFL jobs.

HIRED – The Redskins have hired Jay Gruden as their new head coach.  All other candidates have been eliminated.

1. Jay Gruden, Head Coach – Washington Redskins – Gruden has been hired as Redskins head coach.  Gruden has never been a head coach in the NFL, but was from his time in the arena league and the UFL.  Gruden has been the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals the past two seasons, and has done a good job of developing Andy Dalton.   And the Bengals offense is ranked in the top 10 in the league this year.  And no need to mention who his brother is, as Gruden is a qualified candidate all on his own.    NFL head coaching candidates.

Eliminated Candidates –

  • Pep Hamilton – There’s been no buzz surrounding Hamilton yet.  People may want to see more as the Colts continue to win.
  • Lovie Smith – Was hired as the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • Kevin Sumlin – The Texas A&M head coach has stated he won’t be talking to the NFL about coaching jobs.
  • David Shaw – It appears as though the Stanford head coach won’t be considering the NFL this year either.  But you never know, the right offer could make Shaw re-emerge some where.
  • Art Briles – The Baylor head coach has stated that he will not pursue an NFL coaching job.
