Which Washington Commanders news stories are hitting the headlines as things continue progressing both on and off the field for the franchise?
While the players and coaches got to grips with indifferent air conditions during another practice session at their mandatory minicamp, fans were keeping a close eye on developments in New York. This, of course, was primarily down to the meeting between Josh Harris, Mitchell Rales, and the NFL's finance committee in the hope it can move the Washington Commanders' sale closer to approval.
As always, there was plenty to pick apart from a news standpoint. Among the topics causing conversation recently included details from the Harris group's meeting bringing hope of a swift conclusion, Montez Sweat on his contract situation, Ron Rivera's excitement surrounding Chase Young, and a former cornerback signing with one of the leading Super Bowl contenders.
Let's delve into each topic in more detail.
Former Commanders CB signs with leading contender
There were more than a few eyebrows raised when the Washington Commanders released Cameron Dantzler Sr. without giving him a fair chance at training camp. The cornerback was seen as a potential rotational piece after those in power picked him off the waiver wire from the Minnesota Vikings, but drafting two defensive backs to begin the 2023 NFL Draft meant Ron Rivera deemed him surplus to requirements.
Dantzler has talent - he showed that over his first two seasons before regressing slightly in 2022. Something that the Buffalo Bills are willing to take a chance on after penning the former Mississippi State standout to a one-year deal.
This is arguably the best-case scenario for Dantzler, who gets the chance to compete for starting reps on a team that's among the Super Bowl favorites. If he makes the 53-man roster and thrives, then the Commanders cutting him loose will come under severe scrutiny.
Commanders DE Montez Sweat on contract situation
While the majority of attention centered on Chase Young returning to the practice field, fellow pass-rusher Montez Sweat also came back to the facility after skipping the voluntary part of OTAs. Many believed this was down to the player's contract situation as the defensive end prepares to embark on the final campaign of his rookie deal.
Sweat - unlike Young - has been a model of consistency and stayed healthy throughout the duration of his contract. Paying him over the former Ohio State stud seems like the safe bet, although one couldn't dismiss a huge bounce-back from the No. 2 overall selection in 2020 providing there are no further complications on the health front.
Head coach Ron Rivera stated recently that everything is on hold in terms of further contract extensions until the Washington Commanders' sale process receives formal NFL approval. Once everything gets resolved in a satisfactory manner, then perhaps long-term deals for the likes of Sweat and Kamren Curl will arrive.
A scenario could also emerge where the Commanders let things play out with Sweat, which is a gamble that could cost them more in the long run. When asked about his contract status recently, the one-time Mississippi State star highlighted Daron Payne as the benchmark when it comes to an increase in production resulting in a huge payday via Yahoo Sports.
"Oh yeah, for sure, he definitely laid the blueprint on how to get your bag. So, I mean, salute to him."Montez Sweat via Yahoo Sports
The Commanders could have a big problem on their hands if Sweat and Young both play up to their talent level. But this is the route Rivera decided to go for good or bad.
Commanders excitement with Chase Young
Chase Young is looking to silence increasing doubters and prove beyond all doubt he can fulfill some lofty expectations coming out of college in 2020. Much was made about the defensive end skipping OTAs, but it's clear he's been working hard away from the facility based on his impressive opening to mandatory minicamp.
Young looks explosive and eager to make his mark. The former Ohio State phenom is sporting a knee brace and the Washington Commanders are taking things extremely cautiously at this stage of the preparation period, but it's been great to see him back after a turbulent two years.
When asked about Young during his recent press availability, Ron Rivera stated via Brian Manning of USA Today Sports that there was an enormous sense of excitement about the edge defender. Something that can hopefully progress as the summer practices enhance.
"He looked good. He really did. Real excited about it. Looks like he’s got some explosion back, which was one of the really neat things in terms of watching him, his get off. He looks like he’s more confident."Ron Rivera via USA Today Sports
There are some rumors still circulating regarding a potential trade for Young, which does appear unlikely all things considered. The Commanders want to see a return on their investment, but keeping the pass-rusher healthy is the glue that holds this potential upside together.
Commanders sale edge closer after meeting
Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales entered their meeting with the NFL's finance committee looking to make the document alterations needed to get this transaction over the line. Based on the mood after their lengthy 2.5-hour discussions, this saga could end in the coming weeks.
According to multiple reports after the meeting, everything seemed on track to potentially bring the $6.05 billion sale of the Washington Commanders to a formal vote among other owners in late June or July. Something that was also confirmed by Indianapolis Colts owners Jim Irsay, who stated via John Keim and Stephen Holder of ESPN that even though there were still some slight elements to work out, there is hope everything will proceed as expected.
"It's going well. I'm hopeful because of their inspired aspect and their enthusiasm and their track record that they're really committing, saying, 'Well if that doesn't work then I'll make it right. Either way, we're going to make it right.' So we're just trying to work through those final details. And I'm hopeful that we'll be able to. I would imagine something in mid to late July would be the earliest we'd call it league meeting."Jim Irsay via ESPN
Harris' ownership group has committed to making the changes needed to move the purchase along. Irsay also confirmed that the number of partners also complies with NFL rules, which was reported accurately by A.J. Perez of Front Office Sports when some doubts surfaced.
This represents another positive step in the right direction for fans. And it won't be much longer before the real celebrations can begin.
