Commanders draft receives criticism

While there were a few surprises surrounding the Washington Commanders' approach during the 2023 NFL Draft, it was a decent haul overall. However, this was not an opinion shared by Charles McDonald of Yahoo Sports, who gave Ron Rivera a D+ for his latest selections from the college ranks.

"This Commanders draft probably isn’t moving the needle on what’s going to be a mediocre team in 2023. Outside of (Emmanuel) Forbes, this draft class doesn’t feel like it has a chance to change what the Commanders have going on this year. This feels like a draft class that a future regime is going to have to nurture and foster. A coach in Ron Rivera that’s potentially on the hot seat needs more than what the Commanders have acquired."

The grade does seem a little harsh and things like this are always done off the cuff before any prospect has participated in a single practice. Rivera's earned a level of trust from his previous drafts, so adopting a patient approach seems like the best course of action.

Andre Jones Jr. fulfilling dream with Commanders

The Washington Commanders rounded off their 2023 NFL Draft selections by taking Andre Jones Jr. at No. 233 overall. He's a little rough around the edges, but the athletic measurables suggest the edge rusher can make the team and perhaps carve out a role for himself along the way.

This will be difficult - especially considering the talent littered across Washington's defensive front - but Jones is keen to maximize the opportunity. One that represents fulfilling a lifelong dream for the one-time Louisiana standout.

"It’s a lifelong dream man. It's waiting on opportunity. That's all I was waiting on and that's all I need, opportunity and I'm glad they gave me the chance. That's all. I knew it was coming, but you know, God doesn’t make any mistakes."

As stated previously, Jones has his work cut out. There could be a slight opening after Shaka Toney received an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL's gambling policy, but K.J. Henry - their fifth-round pick whom they traded up to acquire - is also looking to secure out a prominent role for himself.

Whether he makes the team or not, it won't be for the lack of trying. And who knows, Jones could become the latest Commanders' seventh-round pick to far exceed expectations.

Emmanuel Forbes brings elite traits to Commanders

Emmanuel Forbes was always the Washington Commanders' guy, it seems. The ballhawk cornerback is a phenomenal talent that can flip the field with ease, but the selection at No. 16 overall hasn't been universally approved by the widespread media in the week after it was officially confirmed.

This criticism - which some even compared to the Philadelphia Eagles' decision to select Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson - stems from Forbes' lack of bulk. However, this didn't stop the defensive back from making game-changing plays in the SEC, which has been an elite pro talent pipeline for years.

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports was keen to focus on the positives when discussing Forbes recently. The writer acknowledged potential durability concerns but projected the corner to be an elite coverage presence with a smooth transition from the collegiate ranks.

"I love this kid. He has good length, but he is lean at 170 pounds. Even so, he will throw his body around. But you draft him because he's an elite cover player who fills an immediate need. He is going to upgrade an already good defense. "

The former Mississippi State star is going to put on muscle mass not only this offseason but in the years ahead. Considering how high the Commanders were on bringing him into the fold throughout their evaluations, they've likely already devised a concise plan to ensure minimal complications emerge.

Commanders sale could happen in stages

The Washington Commanders will fall into new hands at some stage this offseason. But a recent report suggests there are plenty of hurdles to overcome before something becomes official.

This has nothing to do with Josh Harris' group, which has the infrastructure and the finances to come through with their ambitious plans. The potential complications center on Dan Snyder, to absolutely nobody's surprise.

According to Mark Maske and Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post, the sale could be confirmed in stages. This begins with conditional approval of the $6.05 billion offer and ends with Snyder agreeing to certain stipulations regarding the allegations and investigations associated with his leadership.

"For the sale to be completed and ratified, the other owners will want Snyder not only to drop any attempt to be indemnified himself but also to indemnify the league and the other owners against future legal liability and costs, according to one of those people."

Nothing is ever straightforward when Snyder is involved. The billionaire is renowned for being stubborn and petulant, so it remains to be seen whether or not he'll bow to the NFL's demands and get this long-awaited sale over the line.
