Which Washington Commanders news stories are hitting the headlines as the team gets set for their Back Together Saturday celebrations?
Back Together Saturday is a time for the NFL to rejoice that football is back in full swing. This bears special significance for the Washington Commanders, who are a franchise reborn after Dan Snyder's dark cloud was replaced by hope under an ownership group that has a clear purpose to get the franchise back among the industry leaders once again.
That said, among the stories causing debate recently include Daron Payne's ambitious goals, Brian Robinson Jr.'s differences, Josh Harris' immediate impact on the Commanders, and Dyami Brown's resurgence coming in for praise.
Let's delve into each topic in more detail.
Commanders WR Dyami Brown praised
Dyami Brown looks like a different player throughout the first few days of training camp. The wide receiver's route-running seems more polished and having former college teammate Sam Howell under center is clearly benefitting the former third-round selection immensely.
Gaining targets might be difficult considering the presence of Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, and Jahan Dotson. But head coach Ron Rivera's confidence in Brown is definitely increasing based on his comments via the team's website.
"I see Dyami more confident, more comfortable in his route running right now. He's more precise, he's sharper, and you see him going after the ball. That's something we saw coming out of the draft a few years back that this guy led the NCAA in contested catches, so that's one of the things that we're happy to see again."Ron Rivera via Commanders.com
This is a good start from Brown, but no more than that. The one-time North Carolina stud must build on his newfound momentum in the coming weeks and hope it's enough to get a prominent role within Eric Bieniemy's dynamic system.
Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr.'s differences
Brian Robinson Jr. isn't one to make excuses. Even after suffering gunshot wounds last offseason, the gifted running back took it in his stride, came back quicker than anticipated, and produced some high-quality numbers in extremely difficult circumstances for good measure.
This is a testament to the player's resolve and determination. Robinson admitted recently via Sports Illustrated that he never quite felt like himself last year thanks to obvious reasons, but he's far more comfortable now than at any stage during his brief stint with the Washington Commanders so far.
"From the time I stepped back on the field, I was dealing with all kinds of things going on in my body … All type of things going on in my knee, everything going on in my hip. There wasn’t one time I felt like Brian Robinson. So no, that's night and day from then to now. So, people should expect a lot great things to come when you compare all the things I did while I was limping around all year last year. I feel like I played in a strong role last year and I don't see much adjustment going on. And as far as my role, whatever I'm called on to do. No limits on what I can do."Brian Robinson via Sports Illustrated
Robinson is expected to fill lead-back duties within Eric Bieniemy's offense in 2023. The former Alabama star has caught the eye at camp thanks to his improvement in the passing game, which could mean a true three-down role is in the offing if the same trend continues.
And after everything Robinson's been through up to now, nobody would begrudge him a little bit of luck.
Commanders DT Daron Payne's mindset
After missing the first two days of practice with a minor toe issue, Daron Payne returned to great fanfare on Friday. This was also his first camp session since signing his lucrative four-year, $90 million deal with $59 million guaranteed to prevent him from leaving in free agency.
Payne hit the ground running as part of a defensive line that is expected to be among the Washington Commanders' biggest strengths next season. Jack Del Rio even experimented with a five-man front during drills, slotting Phidarian Mathis in as a nose tackle and clogging up space for others to work around him.
The responsibility associated with such a big deal isn't going unnoticed by Payne based on his comments via The Washington Times. The former Alabama stud also revealed that the defensive line is taking the team's financial faith seriously in pursuit of great things.
"I just (wanted) to get the deal done so I can focus on what I like to do. It ain’t about validating nothing. I like playing football. I love coming up here every day, showing all the hard work that I put in and I love making plays. I know they put a lot of capital into the D-Line room, so we like to put that on our shoulders and we take it head on. We know they like to put us on the field, and we love being on the field."Daron Payne via Washington Times
It's clear getting paid hasn't lessened Payne's thirst for success. If everyone stays clear of injury - especially where Mathis and Chase Young are concerned - this will be the best defensive line in football.
Josh Harris' instant Commanders impact
Josh Harris is a man of action, not empty promises. For the Washington Commanders, this is the most refreshing change of pace imaginable after Dan Snyder's reign of scandal and complete incompetence.
It's not just the free beers or the impressive new bleachers at camp. Harris and his team of investors want the Commanders to move forward with a clear sense of direction and transparency after more than two decades cast aside as a proverbial afterthought among their NFL peers.
There is a long way to go and many short and long-term objectives to achieve. But as Ryan McCafferty from Yardbarker stated, having an owner that actually cares about the franchise and its fanbase is good enough for now.
"At training camp, there has been by all accounts nothing but positive energy. Players like Chase Young have spoken glowingly of the new ownership group, and there seems to be a general vibe in Ashburn that is genuinely optimistic for the future -- for perhaps the first time in more than 20 years. Of course, the Commanders will need to win games on the field in order for this honeymoon to last. But for now, fans can take solace in having the biggest thing they've been missing for decades: an owner who cares."Ryan McCafferty, Yardbarker
Harris' group is taking the next few months to assess and learn the football side of things. They'll also be improving the fan experience at FedEx Field and putting long-term projects such as the new stadium into action.
The Commanders are galvanized across the board thanks to the sale. Letting this positivity go to waste is simply not an option.
