Which Washington Commanders news stories are hitting the headlines as general manager Adam Peters begins to put his plans into motion?

It was hard to keep up with all the frantic developments connected to the Washington Commanders on Friday. General manager Adam Peters promised big changes in pursuit of molding a contender over time. We are starting to see this put into motion following a flurry of roster transactions.

As expected, the headlines were plentiful. Among the stories causing debate include Peters keeping his options open, potential compensation to trade up for quarterback Caleb Williams, Jamin Davis getting his verdict, and wielding the axe on three veteran pieces before free agency.

Let's delve into each topic in more detail.

Commanders LB Jamin Davis spared jail time

After his McLaren was clocked at 114 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone in Loudoun County, Virginia, linebacker Jamin Davis faced a jury trial that could have resulted in serious consequences. Fortunately for the former first-round pick, his attorney was able to resolve the matter without jail time attached.

Davis had his license suspended for six months and was fined $2,500 plus $176 in court fees. He was also sentenced to 180 days of prison time. This was suspended as a result of the misdemeanor reckless driving charge.

The ex-Kentucky college prospect can consider himself fortunate. Davis will put the matter behind him and look to develop his skills further under the Washington Commanders' new coaching staff. This could also be a contract year for the player if those in power opt not to trigger his fifth-year option.

Commanders release three veterans

The Washington Commanders are in a strong financial position heading into free agency. This improved further after the franchise confirmed three prominent veterans had been released ahead of time.

Nick Gates' first and only season with the Commanders didn't go according to plan. The veteran offensive lineman got the starting center position right out of the gate. He struggled to generate any significant momentum and was benched in favor of Tyler Larsen. Although he performed better when reintroduced, his future didn't look especially bright with a new regime coming into the fold.

Another to receive his marching orders was Logan Thomas. The veteran tight end endured some rough luck on the injury front in recent years but managed to stay relatively healthy in 2023. His numbers were solid if not spectacular, leaving general manager Adam Peters comfortable in parting ways with the former Virginia Tech star. Something that saves the Commanders more than $6 million to spend elsewhere.

The Commanders are also on the lookout for a new left tackle after making Charles Leno Jr. surplus to requirements. He has been a consistent performer and a valuable community presence since joining the team. He'll also leave a significant hole in the locker room thanks to his outstanding leadership credentials.

Releasing Leno was seen as a necessary evil by the Commanders, especially considering the player is about to have hip surgery. It's another hole to fill for Peters, who has almost a blank slate to work with during his first offseason as Washington's front-office leader.

Analyst touts compensation for Caleb Williams

While nothing has been confirmed one way or another, all signs point to the Chicago Bears taking Caleb Williams at No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He's the almost consensus top prospect, although some have declared Jayden Daniels as the quarterback with more transferable skills.

Things will become clearer over the next few days. Chicago wants to resolve Justin Fields' future one way or another before free agency according to general manager Ryan Poles. If he wants to extract maximum value for the signal-caller, working out a trade before free agency represents the premium leverage point.

Speculation continues to rise about the Commanders potentially offering Chicago a king's ransom to move up one spot in pursuit of bringing Williams to his boyhood team. Adam Peters hasn't completely dismissed the notion despite the increasing momentum surrounding the USC prospect heading to the NFC North. Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network put together a hypothetical package he believes would be enough to tempt the Bears.

The benefits of bringing a game-changing presence such as Williams to the Commanders are there for all to see. He cares deeply about the franchise and hails from the DC area. It's something he no doubt dreamed of in his younger years. However, the Carolina Panthers' complete incompetence on and off the field has given Chicago the edge.

Commanders GM Adam Peters' open plans

Not many around the league are expecting the Washington Commanders to sit on their hands this offseason. General manager Adam Peters is armed with a wealth of draft picks and $96 million in available salary-cap space according to Spotrac. There are some significant needs to fill, but hopes are high that the right additions can be made with an improved thought process behind the scenes.

Of course, what the Commanders do with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft has obvious ramifications attached. Most believe Washington is going to take one of the promising quarterback prospects. Some are speculating whether a trade-down for a king's ransom is something to consider. When speaking to Peer Schrager from the NFL Network and FOX Sports at the NFL Scouting Combine, Peters was keen to keep all options open.

"I think we could do anything to make our team better. Trade up, trade down. Had a lot of really good conversations with a lot of GMs this week, really productive. So we're going to look through every avenue to make our team better."

This adds yet another fascinating dynamic to what's already been an extremely eventful Commanders' offseason so far. If Peters can come out of the next few weeks positively, Washington should be well-placed to make significant strides in 2024 and beyond. If it goes the other way, there's just no telling how long it'll set the franchise back.
