Dan Quinn led the Washington Commanders into a game-day battle for the first time in their preseason curtain-raiser at the New York Jets. The coaching staff opted to rest several established starters for the clash, which was always expected after a physical join practice between the two clubs in soaking wet conditions on Thursday.
The Commanders have been building positivity throughout a memorable offseason. Preseason results don't matter much, but it's a chance for players across the depth chart to stake their respective claims. No matter their current status, strong performances in warmup games can completely change a player's outlook.
Washington ended up on the wrong end of a 20-17 loss after a late Jets field goal. Quinn and others in positions of power have a lot to ponder when examining the film. There were positives and negatives. However, nobody expected anything different considering this was the first preseason contest.
With this in mind, here are five major talking points from Washington's preseason defeat to the Jets.
Major talking points from Commanders' preseason loss at NY Jets
Jayden Daniels leaves an impression
Jayden Daniels carries the weight of an expectant franchise on his inexperienced shoulders. The Washington Commanders believe this is the quarterback that can spearhead their renaissance. He's come through every challenge with relative ease so far. This same trend continued during his NFL debut at the New York Jets.
It was just a glimpse over one series, but Daniels left his mark. Aside from a nervous-looking opening throw that went incomplete to veteran running back Austin Ekeler, the former LSU star looked comfortable. His deep bomb to wide receiver Dyami Brown, in particular, was nothing short of exceptional.

Daniels concluded his opening drive under center with a rushing touchdown after keeping a zone-read to go in from close range. The Heisman Trophy winner was taken out of the firing line after that. However, it only raised enthusiasm further about what the Commanders might be capable of under his leadership.
The confidence factor is growing around Daniels. Those in power are convinced he can end their revolving door at football's most important position. This performance - albeit fleeting - provided the fanbase with a small example of what the future could hold.
Another Commanders rookie shines
It wasn't just Jayden Daniels from the team's 2024 NFL Draft class who caught the eye at MetLife Stadium. There was also plenty to be encouraged about with second-round pick Ben Sinnott.
Sinnott was taken at No. 53 overall with the potential to become Washington's No. 1 tight end long-term. Just how long that'll take remains to be seen - especially with veteran Zach Ertz also acquired this offseason. However, he's off to a great start.
The former Kansas State star cemented his claims for immediate involvement with a strong showing at the Jets. Sinnott displayed his encouraging clocking capabilities when opportunities arose. He also looked sharp in the passing game en route to three receptions for 57 receiving yards.

This was a big step in the right direction for Sinnott. The Commanders need more from their tight ends in 2024 when one examines the schematic concepts being implemented by offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. There's a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead, but the first-year pro is on track to potentially becoming an offensive focal point right out of the gate.
Mixed bag from Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
After a difficult joint practice against the New York Jets, the onus was on Emmanuel Forbes Jr. to put together a decent showing in the Washington Commanders' first preseason engagement. There were some decent moments from the former first-round selection, but it was a mixed bag in all honesty.
Forbes got the starting outside gig. He made a couple of decent plays in coverage to build confidence. However, he also gave up a touchdown when Jason Brownlee gained leverage for a 12-yard score.

This is going to be the story of the season. The Commanders need to take the rough with the smooth where Forbes is concerned. Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. must manage his development and game-day responsibilities closely. Giving him duties against the top-tier wideouts wouldn't be wise, so they'll have to pick and choose their spots until the Mississippi State product proves himself as a dependable option.
The jury is still out on Forbes. This was another example of how his fortunes could legitimately go either way after just one season.
Dyami Brown seals Commanders roster spot
Dyami Brown came into the offseason with his roster hopes hanging by a thread. The wide receiver was an afterthought throughout his first three seasons with the Washington Commanders. Many wondered if he'd get another shot, but the new regime wanted to see if the player's career could be salvaged by improved schematics and coaching throughout the preparation period.
It's been refreshing to see Brown come to life. He's made several outstanding plays at training camp. The former third-round selection out of North Carolina took this momentum into Washington's preseason opener, emerging from his clash against the New York Jets with a tremendous amount of credit.
Brown caught a deep ball from Jayden Daniels for the game's best highlight. He got downfield quickly on a vertical route and tracked the football superbly before making the catch. The wideout was targeted three times, bringing in two receptions for 55 receiving yards.
This all but confirms Brown's status on the 53-man roster. His blend of speed and athleticism offers something different to the Commanders. If the same trend continues in the weeks ahead, he could be in line for extended involvement in a contract year.
Tyler Owens stakes his claim
Tyler Owens quickly became one of the team's unheralded stars at training camp. The physically gifted defensive back looked explosive and capable of forcing his way into Washington's plans. Doing it in practice is one thing. Producing in a typical game-day setting is completely different.
This was always going to be the biggest challenge for Owens. He's passed every test so far, which left hopes high he could do the same again during his NFL debut at the New York Jets.
Owens displayed his speed with several impressive plays. He blew up a punt return on special teams, which is an essential skill to have for anyone further down the depth chart. The former Texas Tech star didn't look out of place when given reps on the defensive rotation.
Nobody could have asked any more from Owens. This enhanced his chances of making the roster, but finishing the preparation period off strongly is key. After that, those in power will have no option other than to make room for the undrafted free agent. Who will be sacrificed in this scenario is up for debate.
