What were some critical observations from the opening day of Washington Commanders' mandatory minicamp as preparations ramp up for the 2023 season?

Things are heating up for the Washington Commanders as players descended on the facility en mass for the first day of mandatory minicamp. This is another landmark date in the offseason calendar and the final chance to showcase their talents before the team's training camp rolls around.

Ron Rivera and his staff might be working under larger pressure this summer depending on how Josh Harris' meeting with the NFL's finance committee goes tomorrow (Wednesday). Something that could shift the sale process along to a formal vote among other owners in late June or early July depending on which report you read.

Rivera stated that the Commanders will hopefully conclude their installation phase in the coming days before a short period of rest before camp. There's been a notable energy shift and higher tempo across the board, which can hopefully be the spark Washington needs to get out of mediocrity once and for all.

With that being said, here are four critical observations from Day 1 of the Commanders' mandatory minicamp in 2023.

Commanders welcomed some special guests

There was a full turnout of players as Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and Charles Leno Jr. returned to the fold. But the Washington Commanders also welcomed some special guests who know full well what it takes to reach the very top.

According to various sources in attendance, the Commanders had Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive lineman Warren Sapp running the rule over Washington's current front. This is loaded with first-round talent and is expected to be an area of substantial strength once again in 2023.

Another notable face seen walking around the field was Ryan Kerrigan, who needs no introduction whatsoever to Commanders fans. It might not seem like much, but having such respected figures visiting the practice field should serve as inspiration to those following in their footsteps.

Chase Young looked sharp on Commanders return

It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who the star attraction would be on the first day of the Washington Commanders' mandatory minicamp. That was, of course, the return to practice of Chase Young.

The defensive end opted to skip voluntary workouts and get ready away from the facility. This irked some sections of the fanbase, who questioned Young's commitment to the cause and especially after how things have unfolded over the last two years.

Thankfully, Young didn't let this become much of an issue. Although he was sporting a knee brace, the edge defender looked incredibly sharp during drills, demonstrating the sort of explosiveness that made him such a highly-touted recruit coming out of Ohio State.

This is just the first step on Young's road to redemption. There's a long way to go and the Commanders will be eager to take their time with the No. 2 overall selection in 2020 to avoid any unnecessary complications on the health front, but this was better than almost anyone could have hoped for.

Just look at this video montage put together by Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post for further proof.

Young is about to embark on a career crossroads season. And there was a notable increase in urgency from the moment he crossed the white lines on Day 1 of Washington's mandatory minicamp.

Commanders TE Logan Thomas flourishing

Nothing much can be done about the Washington Commanders' lack of investment in their tight end options this offseason. This situation came under further scrutiny when promising youngster Armani Rogers tore his Achilles on the first official day of voluntary OTAs.

The Commanders have long stated they were happy with what they had. Perhaps in the hope Eric Bieniemy could work his magic with those already on the books in readiness for improved production in 2023.

One player that's caught the eye in no uncertain terms this offseason is Logan Thomas. The veteran option was seen as a potential cut candidate earlier this spring, but there's absolutely no chance of that now given how well he's been performing over early offseason workouts.

Bieniemy's scheme is going to be tight-end friendly. Something that was evident throughout his time on the Kansas City Chiefs - although having a potential Pro Football Hall of Famer tandem in Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes obviously helped.

Thomas is rapidly becoming one of quarterback Sam Howell's favorite targets. The pair hit it off once again over the first day of Washington's mandatory minicamp, with team reporter Zach Selby highlighting a sideline grab that left further reasons for encouragement.

Staying healthy will be the biggest key for Thomas. If this can be accomplished, then expect the former Virginia Tech standout to be heavily involved with Bieiemy calling the shots.

Commanders OC Eric Bieniemy isn't suffering fools glady

One thing stood out above all else throughout early off-season workouts. Something that didn't alter the slightest once the Washington Commanders congregated for their opening mandatory minicamp practice on Tuesday.

Eric Bieniemy is vocal, passionate, and leaves absolutely nothing to chance. He is a perfectionist that sets high standards for himself and his player, which is having a positive impact on the Commanders even so early into their on-field preparations.

Another thing that cannot be disputed about Bieniemy is that he doesn't suffer fools gladly. If the tempo is slower than expected or someone isn't pulling their weight, the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator won't be afraid to let them know when production and effort have slipped.

This was evident after one particular play according to Lynnell Willingham from 106.7 The Fan, who claimed that Bieniemy sent one unnamed player - who was reportedly not a starter - to the sidelines. A tone-setting move that made even the most established figures away that nothing but excellence and maximum effort will be tolerated.

"Eric Beinemy just YANKED someone out of the huddle for not going hard enough. “Get out of the huddle, ain’t wasting no f-----g reps. Eric Beinemy FIRED UP."

This is all about raising standards and shifting the culture. There is no room for complacency given the potential for landmark changes if things don't go well in 2023, so Bieniemy is making sure everyone knows what the benchmark is before business picks up at training camp.
