There was an enormous sense of excitement as draft picks and undrafted free agents began their respective NFL journeys with the Washington Commanders at rookie minicamp. After an offseason of almost unprecedented roster upheaval under the new regime, coaches and players got the chance to focus on football once again for the opening portion of what will hopefully become a profitable preparation period.

All eyes were obviously on Jayden Daniels as the No. 2 pick and franchise quarterback. This was also the chance for others taken lower down the draft pecking order or signed when undrafted free agency began to begin carving out roles for themselves. There was a lot of information to take in, but the signs remain positive ahead of the entire roster coming together in the not-too-distant future.

The Commanders have some cautious optimism surrounding their chances of making strides in 2024. Adam Peters was lauded for the way he handled matters during a busy recruitment period for the franchise. Now, the onus falls on Dan Quinn and his coaching staff, who must implement their schematic concepts effectively and ensure everyone is on the same page.

With this in mind, here are three winners and one loser from Washington's rookie minicamp in 2024.

Winner No. 1

Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint - Commanders WR

Coming in as an undrafted free agent can be a daunting challenge. After failing to hear their names called, it's a case of working from the bottom up in pursuit of practice squad places or perhaps entering strong consideration to make the 53-man roster.

Offseason workouts provide an opportunity to stand out. This is something Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint managed to accomplish on Day 1 with a phenomenal one-handed grab - an unbelievable effort that won't go unnoticed by offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and his staff.

Rosemy-Jacksaint is off to a promising start and there does seem to be an opening in the wide receiver room if he can continue to build momentum. Those who were unaware of the former Georgia star previously will be watching his progress closely after making the best possible first impression as a Washington Commanders player.

Winner No. 2

Jayden Daniels - Commanders QB

Jayden Daniels was the talk of the town throughout his rookie minicamp. The quarterback has high expectations on his young shoulders after the Washington Commanders selected him at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. After working out a deal to get the No. 5 from Tress Way following a classy gesture from the Pro Bowl punter, it was time to make a statement.

Daniels has the sort of aura that everyone can get behind. Based on reports by those in attendance, it was an almost flawless opening to life in a Commanders' uniform. There is a lot of hard work ahead and some stiffer challenges to come, but there was a lot to like about the way he conducted himself.

One thing that came across was Daniels' passing accuracy and outstanding mechanics. He gets the football out of his hands quickly and with velocity. His touch over short to intermediate routes was pleasing and the signal-caller's effortless downfield accuracy became another positive throughout an encouraging first two days of practice.

Nobody is getting too carried away at this juncture. That said, Daniels is embracing the responsibility of leading one of the league's most historic franchises back to prominence. He's also done a terrific job of keeping emotions in check and staying focused on the task at hand.

Daniels is setting the example for others to follow. There's a completely different feel around the building thanks in no small part to his arrival. This is only the first stage and there is a lot more growth needed, but one couldn't be anything other than impressed by the way he went about his business.

Next up for the Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU is integrating successfully around Washington's established veterans during upcoming minicamps. That will be a tougher challenge for Daniels - who'll need to prove himself all over again. But his mindset and overall talent should ensure this phase of his immersion should go off without a hitch.

Loser No. 1

Johnny Newton - Commanders DL

For all the excitement over rookie minicamp, one notable negative emerged. This centered on second-round selection Johnny Newton, who isn't expected to be on the field anytime soon after suffering another injury setback.

The ferocious defensive tackle is dealing with a Jones fracture that prevented him from participating in on-field testing throughout his pre-draft assessments. Newton had a walking boot on the other foot as he watched from the sidelines during the team's rookie minicamp - something that caused concern and was explained in greater detail by head coach Dan Quinn when speaking to the media.

Quinn revealed via CBS Sports that the complication on his foot will require surgery in the coming days. There is no timetable set for his return, but the Washington Commanders would be wise to err on the side of caution to prevent any additional problems down the line.

"The foot that he had the procedure done is actually doing really well. So, he has an issue with the other foot. He'll get a procedure done in the next week and then get back started and get going with the process again. But, man, do we have high hopes for him. Like he is such a kick-ass competitor. So, in some ways when you have to get a procedure done, better to do it early, that this didn't happen in the end of August or in September where it sets you back. So, the fact that it's happening now, much better to get that organized first. I'm not giving any timelines for that. We'll get right into him getting the procedure and get started. Knowing him, this is one tough customer, so like it'll be likely slow down, than hurry up."

Fortunately for the Commanders, they have the luxury of building Newton up gradually. Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne represent a productive defensive tackle starting tandem to call upon immediately. Once the former Illinois star is 100 percent healthy, he can begin to accumulate reps.

It's not ideal. It could also be a reason why Newton slipped out of their first-round entirely and into the Commanders' laps at No. 36 overall. However, pressing the panic button would be foolish.

Winner No. 3

Luke McCaffrey - Commanders WR

One of the more intriguing picks made by the Washington Commanders during the 2024 NFL Draft was at the wide receiver spot. This unit was in desperate need of reinforcements to go alongside Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson. After failing to address the position effectively in free agency, those in power turned their attention to Luke McCaffrey at No. 100 overall.

McCaffrey is a fascinating prospect. He's an NFL blue-blood after following in the footsteps of his father Ed and brother Christian into the pros. He's a little raw after making the transition from the quarterback spot in college. However, he looked like someone who could potentially make an impression as a rookie based on this extremely small sample size.

The former Rice standout left a good impression over the two-day camp. McCaffrey seemed to develop an instant rapport with quarterback Jayden Daniels, displaying crisp route-running and assured hands to go along with his eye-catching athleticism according to those in attendance.

The Commanders feel like they can provide the sort of environment that helps McCaffrey blossom. Until he becomes more polished in terms of route technique and body control, there's nothing to suggest Kliff Kingsbury cannot scheme him open as a big slot option while other areas of his production refine.

Many wondered whether McCaffrey was worthy of being taken on Day 2 given his lack of experience. These critiques coupled with the fierce desire to continue the family legacy should be motivation enough for the young pass-catcher. How he deals with NFL-caliber cornerbacks when the time comes will be the deciding factor in his 2024 involvement.

McCaffrey looks to have the tools needed to carve out a productive career for himself. The instant chemistry with Daniels was notable, which can potentially provide both with the springboard needed to excel in the nation's capital.

Nobody is expecting McCaffrey to reach the All-Pro heights of his brother. But in all honesty, very few do.
