Which early roster cuts around the league could be of use to the Washington Commanders during a critical 2023 campaign for the franchise?
It's a difficult day around the NFL as teams make their final adjustments before making initial 53-man rosters official by the 4 p.m. deadline. Mass cuts are already taking place around the league, shattering the dreams of many after giving their absolute all throughout the summer.
The Washington Commanders have some tough choices to make in the coming hours. However, influential figures within the organization will be keeping a close eye on developments outside the franchise with a view to potentially strengthening the team's options via the waiver wire.
Upon further examination, there are a few position groups that be upgraded in terms of depth. Considering what's on the line for head coach Ron Rivera and many others in 2023, sentiment is the last thing that should enter their decision-making process.
Momentum has been steadily building throughout a preseason where the Commanders went unbeaten. So if they could add one or two contributors who didn't quite make the grade elsewhere, the better their chances of becoming a surprise package will be.
With this in mind, here are three early roster cuts that could instantly help the Commanders in 2023.
Commanders could sign Connor Galvin (OL)
The Washington Commanders could use some better depth on their offensive line. It's never been the strongest unit under head coach Ron Rivera, with the jury still out on whether their revamped starting five can provide quarterback Sam Howell enough time in the pocket to shine this season.
Washington's backups also come with more questions than answers. Connor Galvin's surprising release by the Detroit Lions is something that should make the Commanders and any other team looking for help on their protection sit up and take notice.
Galvin was an absolute force throughout the summer. He was the Lions' highest-graded offensive lineman during the preseason according to Pro Football Focus and also won Big-12 Offensive Lineman of the Year during his college stint with the Baylor Bears.
There is more upside attached to Galvin than most of the Commanders' options currently. He also has the position versatility to play inside or out that Ron Rivera loves in all his offensive linemen, so this is someone who ticks a lot of boxes if Washington decides they need to solidify their backup alternatives if injury strikes.
Other options might become available in the coming hours. But someone with Galvin's upside is well worth considering.
Commanders could sign Christian Kirksey (LB)
The Washington Commanders haven't done much to strengthen their defensive second level throughout one of the most memorable offseasons in franchise history. Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio seem happy enough to stand pat, which indicates one or two linebacker sets are coming more prominently this season unless someone like Khaleke Hudson emerges as a genuine difference-maker.
This could be a recipe for success given the two new defensive backs and the potential for a five-man defensive front wreaking havoc. But it does nothing to detract from what complications might emerge if poor form or injury hits the linebacking corps of which options are incredibly bare.
Adding someone like Christian Kirksey would alleviate these concerns. The former third-round selection was a shock release by the Houston Texans on Monday as new head coach DeMeco Ryans looks to go younger and more dynamic across the board, but he should generate significant interest despite being on the wrong side of 30 years old.
Kirksey's availability should provoke a discussion within the Commanders. One could even make a strong case for the player being an upgrade over projected starter Cody Barton all things considered.
This is a proven performer who attained 124 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions last season. Kirksey's leadership within the locker room is something else that could assist greatly during such an important campaign, so the benefits are there for all to see.
Commanders could sign Desmond King (CB)
The Washington Commanders made some improvements to their cornerback room throughout the offseason. But adding another capable performer to enhance depth is something those in power should contemplate if the right opportunity comes along heading into Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Kendall Fuller, Benjamin St-Juste, and Emmanuel Forbes look like a potentially productive starting trio if everyone stays healthy. Second-rounder Quan Martin had an up-and-down preseason but should feature plenty, with the likes of Danny Johnson, Christian Holmes, and Rachad Wildgoose also hoping for roster spots.
If the Commanders decide more is needed from an outside source, then Desmond King's availability should make people sit up and take notice. The former All-Pro remains productive and performed well for the Houston Texans, but DeMeco Ryans is providing those with less experience with an opportunity to prove their worth.
The Commanders won't be alone if they decide to covet King. His specialty covering the slot could be useful and also keep Martin out of the proverbial firing line until he is 100 percent ready to take on starting responsibilities.
King shouldn't have to wait too much longer for a new home. If it was to be the Commanders, they'd have four or potentially five dependable corners if Martin manages to live up to his end of the bargain.
