Jayden Daniels put together the greatest season of any rookie quarterback in NFL history. But as the signal-caller stated throughout his memorable journey, the next challenge is all that matters.
This attitude got the Washington Commanders further than even the brightest optimist envisaged. They defied the odds to make the postseason with 12 regular-season wins. That wasn't enough, beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions to book their place in the NFC Championship game.
Daniels is a big reason why. His flawless poise, unflappable demeanor, and ability to come through in the most crucial moments picked this sleeping giant off the canvas and into contention. Standing in the way of his NFL immortality was the Philadelphia Eagles.
The former LSU standout knows this foe well. He's played twice against them already this season. Daniels' first game versus Philadelphia didn't go well thanks to injury. He put this right with a standout showing to lead a stunning fightback in Week 16.
The stakes don't get much higher than this. But make no mistake, Daniels is ready for the moment. He's proven it on countless occasions this season. This was his sternest test, which was made more difficult without the presence of prolific right guard Sam Cosmi. Handling the heat was essential.
As it turned out, this was a step too far for the Commanders and Daniels. They were soundly beaten by a dominant Eagles team. Sloppy errors didn't help, but Washington can have no complaints when it's all said and done.
With this in mind, here are five major observations from Daniels' playoff performance at Lincoln Financial Field.
Major observations from Jayden Daniels' playoff performance at the Eagles
Jayden Daniels' pre-snap control
Jayden Daniels looked to take the sting out of this game. To do this, the signal-caller set about controlling the clock through minimal risks and sound pre-snap recognition.
Considering this was an intimidating environment, Daniels didn't flinch. He was in complete control of proceedings, identifying where pressure was coming from and making sure everyone was aware of their assignments. This is in keeping with his polished performances throughout a phenomenal rookie campaign.
Daniels controlled proceedings like a savvy veteran. This comes through exceptional preparation during the week and the mentality to ignore the outside noise. The Commanders had a lot of problems at Lincoln Financial Field, but this steady hand was a huge positive to build upon.
It settled everybody down. The Commanders were behind early on, but the process never changed. It was another fine example of the outstanding credentials Daniels brings to the table — an unflappable presence under center that others willingly follow into battle.
Jayden Daniels' decent first half showing
The Washington Commanders were overwhelmed in the first half. Some questionable officiating and silly mistakes ended up being their undoing en route to a heavy deficit. But rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was once again a shining light amid the relative doom and gloom.
It wasn't perfect from Daniels, far from it. He missed some throws and was lucky not to have one picked off. The Commanders' inability to finish drives with touchdowns despite controlling the clock was something else that held them back.
Overall, Daniels was way down the list of Washington's problems. He made some crucial throws when needed, put his elusiveness and pocket manipulation to good use, and kept Philadelphia's vaunted defense on their toes. If others had met their end of the bargain, the Commanders wouldn't have found themselves in such a mess.
This decent effort was reflected in Daniels' first-half stats. It also became obvious that he'd need to take this game over for Washington to stand any chance of mounting a fightback.
- 62.5 percent completion
- 139 passing yards
- 1 passing touchdown
- 0 interceptions
- 1 sack against
- 31 rushing yards (4 carries)
- 92.2 passer rating (ESPN)
Daniels protected the football and was efficient. Unfortunately, his teammates couldn't say the same during an uncharacteristic display.
Jayden Daniels' will to inspire
The Commanders had their backs against the wall almost from the outset. But with Jayden Daniels' exceptional will leading the charge, this team never accepts their fate.
Even when the Commanders had a 34-15 advantage, Daniels refused to throw in the towel. He's made of much sterner stuff than that, taking matters into his own hands and giving the Eagles plenty to think about.
There is intensity and urgency in equal measure where Daniels is concerned. He's not the most flamboyant, preferring to go about his business methodically with a quiet aura that his teammates naturally gravitate towards. Mounting this sort of fightback was almost impossible, but the dual-threat weapon tried valiantly nonetheless.
Daniels never shirks a challenge. He drives his team forward no matter the circumstance. Washington's inability to stop the Eagles made things almost impossible to overcome, but having someone so determined is only going to help the Commanders build on this superb early success in the coming years.
The Eagles, and the entire league for that matter, know they're going to have their work cut out containing Daniels. His relentless pursuit of greatness and will to inspire is a joy to watch — something that's only going to improve further once Washington upgrades its supporting cast.
Jayden Daniels deserved better
Jayden Daniels did his part and then some. Unfortunately for the signal-caller, not everyone could say the same.
The Washington Commanders have been so careful with the football throughout the postseason. Winning the turnover battle played a significant role in their triumph over the Detroit Lions last time out. It was also the primary catalyst behind their demise with a Super Bowl appearance at stake.
Sloppy mistakes and poor execution halted momentum at the worst possible times. Dyami Brown's fumble in the first half kicked things off. Just when it looked like Daniels was getting the Commanders back into the game, veteran running back Austin Ekeler coughed up the football and the Eagles made them pay to cross the 40-point barrier.

These were avoidable mistakes. Dan Quinn preached on countless occasions during Washington's miraculous run the importance of protecting the football. And in all honesty, Daniels deserved better.
This is the clearest sign yet that the Commanders need more dependability around Daniels. He's done a remarkable job throughout a rookie campaign to remember, but some of his teammates choked in the NFC Championship pressure cooker.
That's the long and short of it. Daniels held firm in the face of pressure and did have some valuable contributors, but it wasn't enough.
Jayden Daniels' rookie fairytale ends, but the future couldn't be brighter
All good things must come to an end. For Jayden Daniels, the Commanders' loss at the Eagles marked the conclusion of the greatest season of a rookie quarterback in NFL history.
The fairytale run is over. But the future couldn't look brighter with Daniels spearheading the franchise's renaissance.
This is just the start. Daniels is only going to get better. The Commanders will enhance his supporting cast. It looks like Kliff Kingsbury is sticking around, providing the signal-caller with scheme familiarity entering Year 2 of his professional career. This makes Washington an attractive destination after years of languishing in the NFL's wilderness.
It was a step too far for the Commanders despite Daniels' best efforts. But when the disappointment subsides and the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft gets a chance to reflect, it'll make him even more determined to succeed.
The Commanders must do their part. General manager Adam Peters has an abundance of resources at his disposal this offseason and Washington's window is now. Aggressive recruitment and drafting well will make a huge difference to this squad in 2025.
Daniels is a superstar. He carried the Commanders throughout the season and ensured they achieved more than even the brightest optimist envisaged. Falling at the final conference hurdle to a formidable foe doesn't detract from that whatsoever.
