What critical observations can we take from the Washington Commanders heading into a pivotal 2023 NFL Draft for the franchise?
After a seemingly neverending stream of rumors, speculation, and everything in between, NFL Draft week has finally arrived. And for the Washington Commanders, it’s one of the most fascinating selection weekends in recent memory.
At least from the outside looking in, there is plenty riding on this year’s draft for those in power. The roster looks good aside from one or two problem positions, so getting their next batch of college recruits right is the best possible way to ensure genuine progress when competitive action resumes.
Ron Rivera and his team have drafted well since he came into the fold. Anything less this time around will cast more doubt on his long-term future with the franchise heading into Year 4 of his reign.
With that being said, here are three critical Commanders’ observations ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Critical Observation No. 1

Commanders have everything on the table
After some decent-looking signings in free agency, the Washington Commanders are approaching the 2023 NFL Draft with a sense of freedom. Ron Rivera plans to play the board according to the best prospect available at the time, even if this might not be the wisest move initially given some crucial needs at cornerback and the offensive line.
Rivera clearly feels the roster is in a good place for a potential luxury or two along the way. But almost everything remains on the table – including trading up or down depending on which prospects are available at any given stage.

Eric Bieniemy will be influential in the Commanders’ draft
The Washington Commanders pulled off a major coup by landing Eric Bieniemy this off-season. What’s important now is giving the team’s new assistant head coach/offensive coordinator everything he needs to be successful in a different environment.
Bieniemy is looking to prove beyond all doubt he has what it takes to become a future NFL head coach. Not only does he have full control of Washington’s offense, but the respected coach has also been given the freedom to form his own staff and also possesses a leading voice in offensive recruitment for good measure.
The Commanders have invested some heavy draft capital in their defense over recent years. While a few holes remain on that side of the football, don’t be surprised if Bieniemy’s influence leads to a more offense-focused draft from Washington over the big weekend.
There’s a lot to like about the skill position options. The offensive line could use one or two immediate contributors, with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett set to compete for the starting quarterback job unless a drastic change in thought process emerges during the draft.
However, if Bieniemy feels like certain prospects can fit better within his scheme, nothing can be dismissed. The coach took a leap of faith by joining the Commanders, so it’s vital for the organization to maximize his time with the team before he gets an opportunity to lead an NFL franchise.

Commanders sale raises the stakes
One distraction has been prevalent across the Washington Commanders’ offseason above all else. That is, of course, the impending sale of the franchise by Dan Snyder.
After months of speculation, we’re finally getting somewhere. The ownership group led by Josh Harris is in the process of tweaking their paperwork before a $6.05 billion agreement gets the green light, which could happen in the coming weeks depending on how things play out in the meantime.
Ron Rivera has been eager to focus on football in the face of constant questions. However, this landmark change only raises the stakes for all involved currently during the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Commanders have no margin for error next season. It’s the postseason or bust within a highly-competitive NFC East and if the new owners aren’t convinced, they won’t hesitate to hit the reset button.
This pressure is nothing new to Rivera, whose seat would have been pretty hot even if the sale wasn’t imminent anyway. He’s worked on the premise of avoiding desperation and sticking to his original plan throughout the preparation period, but there is now an added sense of urgency to nail the draft and put Washington in a better position to thrive.
Otherwise, it will likely be Rivera’s final draft process as the Commanders’ head coach.
