Commanders land Joey Porter Jr. in Mel Kiper’s mock
There is always an enormous sense of anticipation whenever Mel Kiper Jr. releases mock drafts. He is one of the most experienced analysts in the business with decades worth of knowledge, so his opinion holds more weight than most during the frenzied period of pre-draft assessments.
In his latest two-round mock draft, the ESPN figurehead gave the Washington Commanders a potential shutdown cornerback at No. 16 overall. Joey Porter Jr. was the pick, which would fill an instant need and could solidify one side of the field long-term if the prospect reaches expectations.
"“While I thought about offensive line — Washington ranked 28th in yards per carry (4.0) last season — signing right tackle Andrew Wylie filled the biggest hole. On the other side of the ball, finding a corner should be the priority. At 6-2 with long arms, (Joey) Porter would make a lot of sense. He has all the tools to be a spectacular cover man.”"
With the Commanders’ second-round selection, Kiper chose offensive tackle, Blake Freeland. The mammoth edge protector has the athletic profile normally associated with BYU prospects, but expecting miracles right out of the gate is unrealistic given the technical flaws that need ironing out.
Adding Porter and Freeland over the opening two rounds addresses Washington’s two major needs. Something that could provide extra freedom with their remaining six selections.
