Commanders must pick their QB1

Regardless of what the Washington Commanders do with their eight 2023 NFL Draft picks, their success will be directly correlated with the quarterback position. This has been a constant source in the team’s side for years and something that must change to stand any chance of shocking the world en route to an NFC East title.

Ron Rivera stated there will be a legitimate competition throughout the summer between Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett. The former fifth-round selection seems to be the clubhouse leader, but Washington’s recent free-agent acquisition also feels quietly confident about becoming the No. 1 option after performing well for the Cleveland Browns last season.

There will be no favoritism from Rivera – he’s not in a position for that. The respected figure plans to play the signal-caller that gives his team a chance to be successful, so let the best man win.

"“I think it’s open right now, I really do. All I said was that Sam was going to get the first crack. I didn’t say that Sam was the guy. He’s going to have to come in and earn it. I’m going to play that guy that we believe at the end of the day gives us the best chance at winning football games.”"

In an ideal world, Howell will take the reins and become the gunslinging presence capable of thriving within Eric Bieniemy’s scheme. Should the North Carolina product fails to grasp his big opportunity, the Commanders at least have a dependable veteran to step in and assume responsibilities under center.
